Ever wondered what your birthday says about you? Or why men and women
find different jokes funny? Or how to tell if someone is lying? If so,
you need some Quirkology in your life.
Professor Richard Wiseman has dedicated his life to understanding the
backwaters of the human mind and going to places where mainstream scientists
fear to tread. The result is Quirkology – a book that will change
the way you think about thinking.
The experiment was conducted by Prof Wiseman and the British Council.
All of the research was conducted between 11.30am and 2.00pm local
time, on August 22nd 2006.
Researchers from The
British Council found a busy street with a wide pavement that
was flat, free from obstacles, and sufficiently uncrowded to allow
people to walk along at their maximum speed.
They timed how long it took 35 men and 35 women to walk along a 60
foot stretch of the pavement. They only monitored adults who were
on their own, and ignored anyone holding a mobile telephone conversation
or struggling with shopping bags..
The previous research into the pace of life was conducted by Prof
Robert Levine from the California State University.
